The Earth’s Protective Ceiling

In the Quran, many descriptions of natural phenomena appear, and modern science has, in recent years, arrived at the same conclusions. One of those natural phenomena is the very nature of our atmosphere, an entity we often take for granted.
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ سَقْفًۭا مَّحْفُوظًۭا ۖ وَهُمْ عَنْ ءَايَـٰتِهَا مُعْرِضُونَ ٣٢
"And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they turn away from its signs." (21:32)

Within the Quran exist many testaments and signs meant to challenge the reader, ultimately validating the holy book’s truths, one of many ways the book proves to its readers that it is divine in origin. Modern scientific discoveries have illustrated one way the sky functions as a protective ceiling, particularly through the phenomenon of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
UV radiation is a type of light akin to visible light that is invisible to the human eye, but its effects are felt strongly. Different forms of light carry different levels of energy, with high-frequency forms like gamma radiation possessing higher energy, whilst lower frequency forms like radio waves possess lower energy density. UV radiation is stronger than visible light but weaker than X-rays or Gamma rays. Along with visible light, UV rays are produced by stars, including our sun, and travel to Earth (NASA).
Although limited exposure to UV radiation is beneficial to humans in the production of vitamin D, excessive exposure can result in sunburns, eye damage, and increased risk of skin cancer. UV radiation also has similar effects on other animals and can kill plant life, which could make the planet inhospitable for humans. This is because UV rays have a high energy density, breaking chemical bonds in DNA and causing mutations that can lead to cancer or make life as we know it difficult to sustain (WHO).
This is where the ayah ties in with the phenomenon of UV radiation. The sky indeed protects life from UV radiation via what is known as the Ozone layer. Ozone (O3), also called trioxygen, is a gas found at the higher levels of the atmosphere, forming what we know as the Ozone layer. Ozone interacts with UV rays, decomposing into Oxygen after absorbing the rays’ energy. Later, these components reform into Ozone, thereby preventing the layer from deteriorating over time. The remarkable nature of the Ozone layer is that whilst harmful UV radiation is absorbed, the limited amount of healthy UV radiation, as well as visible light, is not impeded, thereby allowing Earth to host life and remain hospitable (NASA).
In truth, the atmosphere performs many functions beyond shielding life from ultraviolet radiation. It regulates temperature, slows down meteors before they can strike the planet’s surface, and, together with the Earth's magnetic field, helps deflect harmful charged particles originating from the Sun. Though invisible to us and often taken for granted, the atmosphere is in reality a delicate and complex system upon which all life depends. Without it, the Earth would more closely resemble barren worlds such as Mars, exposed to harsh radiation and incapable of sustaining the abundance of life that we observe today (NASA).
Perhaps what is most remarkable about the Qur'anic description is its simplicity. Rather than describing the intricate mechanisms involved, the Qur'an presents the sky as a "protected ceiling" (سقفاً محفوظاً). Modern science has since revealed numerous ways in which this protection manifests itself. The ozone layer, atmospheric pressure, and the shielding effects of the upper atmosphere are but a few examples of the countless means by which life on Earth is preserved. Thus, what once appeared to be merely the empty sky above us is now understood to be an essential barrier separating the conditions necessary for life from the hostile environment of outer space (NASA; At-Tafsir).
Thus, modern science has uncovered one of the mechanisms by which the sky serves as a "protected ceiling" over the Earth. The atmosphere, and particularly the ozone layer, shields life from much of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation while permitting visible light and beneficial levels of sunlight to reach the surface. What is often taken for granted proves to be a remarkably delicate and finely balanced system, one that allows life to flourish upon the Earth.
