Addressing the West’s Glorification of Celebrities: Macklemore vs. Zionists

On September 4th, 2026, American rapper Macklemore announced solidarity with Palestine at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. During the performance, he donned a Palestinian keffiyeh and displayed footage of Gaza, while exclaiming, “Free Palestine” [1]. The rapper also performed his Palestinian protest song “Hind’s Hall” in commemoration of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), with approximately 335 bullet holes being counted on the car she was killed in [1,2]. Subsequently, the rapper faced major backlash online, with prominent pop star Alecia Moore (P!nk) stating that the event “scared her” and the people she loves because of her Jewish identity.
Yet, I’m sure the over 20,000 children in Palestine were scared when their lives were tragically taken by the Israeli regime because of their religious, cultural, and ethnic identities, not to mention the constant stream of civilians being murdered in cold blood by the IOF for performing everyday leisure activities, such as flying a kite or going to school [3]. But for P!nk, life must be truly frightening, right? While living a multi-billionaire lifestyle with an enormous roof over her head?
Following Macklemore being accused of antisemitism, Robert Kraft kicked him off of Ed Sheeran’s US Stadium Tour, with Ed Sheeran taking an apolitical stance, stating on his social media, “If we only focus on shouting the loudest, nothing will ever change.” This is exactly the stance that the majority of Western mainstream media artists have taken, and it reflects a larger issue at hand: celebrities being placed on pedestals yet failing to use their positions and influence for social good. Ed Sheeran has no trouble speaking up on issues regarding Ukraine, hosting a solidarity concert in 2023, and P!NK is a UNICEF ambassador where she advocates for children’s health and nutrition. Ironic, right? Apparently, to P!nk “children’s health” doesn’t include the health of Palestinian children, and speaking out about one global crisis but turning a deaf ear to another is perfectly acceptable for Ed Sheeran.
Another example is the major pop artist Taylor Swift, who, with an estimated 250 to 300 million core fans, has never once expressed solidarity or taken a stance on Palestine [4]. Yet, in the United States, she is considered an influential idol for teens and women alike. Similar patterns trend with core influencers such as Sabrina Carpenter, Selena Gomez, and so on. When an individual possesses the ability, voice, wealth, and platform to make a difference, it is abhorrent when they choose to remain complicit in an active genocide.
If artists such as Taylor Swift choose to raise their voices in solidarity with the people of Palestine, imagine the impact it will have on her 250 million-plus fans, and the money, resources, and awareness that could be mobilized to help the oppressed [4]. Truly, the fact that a major pop artist has only just gained traction for speaking out about Palestine is frustrating, considering the prevalence of the issue since Al-Nakba in 1948, and the increased coverage of events in 2023.
As citizens of the world, it is our duty to question the power and influence we give celebrities. Major pop stars are making billions per year, yet failing to address global genocides and humanitarian crises plaguing everyday civilians. Yet individuals continue to offer unwavering support to these pop artists, treating them as deities and role models in their everyday lives. But why should they? Why do some of these celebrities hold such a high hierarchical standing in our societies when their practical contributions to society are minimal, and they are complicit in some of the most disgusting crimes against humanity taking place today?
It is important that we as moral people continue to reprimand celebrities such as Ed Sheeran, P!nk, and Robert Kraft to ensure that celebrities’ willful ignorance towards the suffering of the people in Palestine does not slide by unchecked. Citizens should consider boycotting such celebrities altogether and holding them accountable for their actions, as the lack of concern for the well-being of the oppressed is intolerable, appalling, and downright evil.
